Oh, turns out there were only 23 videos in the whole playlist. Unfortunately it didn’t cover including images (I really want to be able to use a header image). Excellent tutorial though and I definitely recommend it. Needs slight familiarity with Terminal, HTML, CSS.

I’ve been watching the Introduction to Hugo videos from Mike Dane and am up to #22. They’re really good. Problems so far:

  • typos (mine)

  • working in the wrong folder / directory

  • files from previous videos ‘interfering’.

I don’t yet understand the hierarchy of folders.

Sometimes the dogs and I are lucky and we have the 10 Km of beach between Ōtaki and Kuku all to ourselves. To be honest: I think I saw a couple of dots 2 km away north of the river mouth, but that could have just been driftwood.

Looking south: empty beach as far as the eye can see. Looking north: empty beach as far as the eye can see. Map showing 10 Km of west coast beach between Ōtaki in the south and Kuku in the north.

Yesterday with cleaning, dog walking, mowing, mulching, planting, watering I did 300% of my daily move goal. Today I’m only too aware!

Returning from the beach, we saw these excellent textured clouds in the east.

I don’t want to lose my rights, but at the end of the day, this is actually not about a part of society losing its rights. It’s about the whole of society maintaining their freedom.

A start on customising a Micro.Blog theme

I want to customise the theme for my Micro.Blog hosted Love Waikawa Beach community website. This has set me on the track of first, several hours of head-bashing, and second, learning about Hugo and themes.

Here’s what I’ve found so far, that seems useful. It may help others who want to follow this path.

Micro.Blog is based on the Hugo blogging system.

Start with Manton’s 7 minute Micro.blog custom themes video.

Then move on to the Introduction to Hugo videos from Mike Dane.

Handy reference: Hugo’s Directory Structure Explained by Jake Wiesler.

Hugo Documentation

Following the instructions in Mike’s videos I’ve installed Homebrew on my Mac and then installed Hugo. Next up I’ll download a theme and set to work.

Note: way back in 2006 I’d learned so much about WordPress and its predecessor B2 that I ended up teaming up with Maria Langer to write the first English-language book about WordPress: WordPress 2: Visual QuickStart Guide, Peachpit Press, Jun 29, 2006, by Maria Langer and Miraz Jordan.

That gives me the confidence to think I can learn about Hugo and use what I’ve learned in some productive way.

Are you a weapon? Pat yourself down. Another excellent cartoon from Sharon Murdoch subsequent to the Christchurch NZ shooting attack that killed or injured 100 people at mosques on 15 March 2019.

Why Time moves faster as we age

Days seemed to last longer in your youth because the young mind receives more images during one day than the same mind in old age.

We live at the beach so things rust and degrade quickly. That includes items like the cheap toilet roll holder that fell apart a week or two ago. Today I removed the clamp thing that had held it and installed a bamboo replacement. That shouldn’t degrade.

It’s been ages since I went for a bike ride, but today seemed like a good day for it. Here’s my bike at the all-purpose entrance to the beach (ie vehicles, horses), with a plethora of warning signs. Kāpiti Island in the background.

Prior attacks in New Zealand:

1881 … Crown troops invaded … Parihaka and decimated the village.

1864, Crown troops set fire to a whare karakia (church) in Rangiaowhia during morning prayer, incinerating non-combatants, including tamariki (children) and kaumātua (elders).

There were a couple of really noisy magpies by the house this evening. This one sat on a driftwood sculpture. Meanwhile my 17 year old cat, Aphra, was just hanging out nearby.

Wow, a group of 3 low-flying Hercules aircraft just passed overhead, all trailing smoke. Someone else got this quick video: www.facebook.com/charlie.s… One photo with my zoom lens and Fuji X-T2, the other with iPhone 7.

Roughly once a week I go to Ōtaki where we own a house we rent out to a long-term tenant. It’s my job to mow the small lawn round the back and to weed the front ‘beach scene' garden. I don’t think the neighbours, who all have real or fake grass, like our beach scene. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Garden full of grasses and low plants.

Catherine Trundle: believing oneself to be non-racist is now simply not enough. We have to be anti-racist, and that requires … publicly rejecting hatred…It also requires us to take a deep look at how the structures of our society embed racism into the normal and the mundane

Dame Anne Salmond: white supremacy is a black strand woven through our history as a nation. … it’s not the only legacy we have. From the outset, ideas of justice and kindness, equality and mutual respect have provided a counterpoint to greed and colonial ambition.

Apologies for the duplication. I just reposted two posts from this morning, but this time to the correct blog. The other blog will disappear again soon.

What a gorgeous morning! Clear skies, inversion layer over the paddocks, sun about to rise.

Mondays I check the level in our rainwater tank. It doesn’t rain much in the summer months here. I drop a plastic cup on a string till it touches the water, measure the string and do a few sums. We have less than 10,000 litres left, but good rain should come soon.
