Whew, the rain stayed away for the community picnic we organised. A good number of people turned up — maybe 40? And we invited our two new Horowhenua District Councillors who joined us for the whole time. Lots of food and chat. I believe it was a success.

I’ll see your 1 and raise you 300. Auckland suburb raises solidarity flag after homophobic incidents: 🏳️🌈
I suggested: if they’re upset about flying one pride flag… let’s fly a lot more
300 pride flags will be raised … for Hobby Pride, a response to homophobic behaviour
Sasha looks good after her groom. 🐶

Sasha was a good girl, quietly waiting while I hung out the washing. 🐶

Excellent: Anna Havron’s Inner Trolls and Better Angels: Being a Person, Online:
I see great value in sites that post personal observations. …they help us grow in empathy and imagination. They help us see one another as full human beings rather than objects, roles, or labels.
Another in a series whose characters are so appealing: The Missing Babysitter Mystery (The Supermarket Mysteries Book 3) by Rachel Ward. 📚
a body found on a building site … has been buried for 15 years. Could it have anything to do with the babysitter who went missing?

Crime, and also lesbian romance; I enjoyed Goslyn County by A.M. McKnight. 📚
While investigating three burglaries, Goslyn PD Detective Olivia Winston meets IRS Special Agent Maureen Jeffries who is pursuing a tax fraud suspect. Their cases are connected…

I’m not a sports fan myself, but this level of success for women’s sport is phenomenal — Eden Park sells out for Black Ferns’ Rugby World Cup final:
The Black Ferns and England will face off in front of a sold out crowd of over 40,000 fans at Eden Park this weekend.

Yesterday on a radio show the host welcomed a guest, Anjum Rahman, with “As-salamu alaikum”, a greeting seldom heard here. It could be seen as a token, but on reading Dot Scot — Matt Gemmell’s “ostensibly small things can be disproportionately important” I realised it’s a foot that wedges a door open, allowing light and fresh air to pass through. And to be fair to RadioNZ, they are actually actively working on inclusivity and appropriate language.
Those eggs I saw on the beach the other day weren’t from an Oystercatcher, but rather this dedicated gorgeous Pied Stilt.
Such delicate creatures with such long legs! 🐦

Four of the half dozen black swans at the lake this morning. 🐦

For Micro Monday I’d very much recommend @annahavron who writes intelligent, thoughtful articles about life, but who also posts cool photos of cats, trees, birds and other things.
We have 3 flavours of the food Sasha used to eat (recently). Last night and this morning she wouldn’t eat anything. Sigh. Finally I relented and added some wet food. At least she ate the wet food off the top. 🐶

Volume up! 0900 on a Sunday morning (yesterday): the sounds of silence. Listen for the birds. One of the things I love about where I live. What does it sound like where you live (or are at the moment)?
Many thanks to @cheri who pointed out this superb 33 minute mini-documentary on Angela Lansbury’s life and work:
Restricted Area Please Keep Out.

The lawn at the house we’re selling looked terrible a few days after someone we hired mowed it. This weather just makes grass grow! Today I took the motor mower down and trimmed it up for the Open Home. Hard work!

I nearly stepped on this clutch of 5 Oystercatcher eggs on the beach. The birds lay them in the sand near a bit of driftwood. I was actually looking for a suspected nest further away and almost didn’t see this. 🐦
Update, 07 November 2022: My friend Stephen discovered a Pied Stilt sitting on these eggs, rather than an Oystercatcher.

There’s spam and then there’s ham. Supermarket ham, to be precise:
Made in New Zealand from imported and local ingredients. Pork butchered in the following countries may have been used in the production of this product:
Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United States of America. These countries may not always reflect the country the animal has been raised in.

As it was set in Aotearoa New Zealand, I had high hopes for this book but was sadly disappointed. The Long Island Iced Tea Goodbye (Career Crisis Café Mystery Book 1) by Emily Selby was facile and riddled with careless typos and missing words. 📚
