Only US$0.99 today. I'm excited to buy another in this series by Alison Joseph. If you're interested, jump in. A Hymn of Death (Sister Agnes Mysteries Book 5). 📚

I'm on the Joffe Books mailing list and pick up many titles I enjoy (and some I don't) at 99 cents.

Flying south before dawn.

A vibrant sunset is visible above a layer of clouds, as seen from an airplane window with part of the aircraft's wing in the top portion of the image.

Our friends have a second dog: Rush, the Malinois, who's a very good boy indeed.

I so wish I could have bought this gorgeous pottery goat by Fiona Tunnicliffe. I'm smitten by its expression. Just not practical at the moment though, especially as we're flying home tomorrow with cabin bags only.

A large mural depicts a surreal scene of a cat with large, round eyes near a towering insect-like creature against a backdrop of an expansive sky, with parked cars in the foreground.

Last night our friends took us out for a delicious Thai meal at Sukjai Thai Restaurant. I enjoyed chicken Pad Kee Mao (mild)
Flat rice noodles stir fried with aromatic basil leaves, capsicum, fresh chilli, green bean, bamboo shoots and vegetables.

We celebrated our friends selling a house.

The more books in this series I read the more I enjoy them. False Idols (Sister Agnes Mysteries Book 4) by Alison Joseph was another great read. 📚

It seems more that several interesting lives intertwine, rather than a dedicated investigation. Then facts emerge that lead to a solution. Good stuff!

Busy day: we've been cruising around Ruakākā and One Tree Point. Visited a couple of cafes: The Bach cafe at Ruakākā Beach had a nice vibe. Here's a view of / from the beach (east coast).

Little Boo has a really nice setup. That’s quite a smorgasbord of toys.

Heading north again for a long weekend …

I think the last 6 weeks or so of strength and core training are paying off. When I woke up this morning I realised I'm feeling 'bigger' somehow — perhaps more present in my body. And that's one of the things I wanted to achieve.

Rest day today though.

Having bought a set of resistance tubes, today I tried the Whole-Body Resistance Band Workout (Ages 50+). It went pretty well I think, though I need to figure out the best resistance level for each exercise.

I was initially uncertain about The Girls in the Snow (Nikki Hunt Book 1) by Stacy Green, but the book grew on me and in the end I quite enjoyed it. 📚

Nikki Hunt's current case takes her back to where she grew up, and where her parents were murdered. That complicates things for her …

My body didn’t want to do this new strength routine today, but willpower prevailed (in the end). I haven’t done the shoulder press or lateral raise before, and they were hard. I went with 1 Kg weights for those two.

  • Weekly Muscle Gain Exercise Routine for Ages 50+

    • legs: quads and glutes — goblet squat

    • back of legs: hamstrings, glutes and lower back — (6"34") romanian deadlift

    • back and arms: — (7'56") dumbbell row — one hand on back of chair, one leg forward, one dumbbell — pull dumbbell straight up

    • shoulders, triceps: dumbbell shoulder press — (10'21") sit on chair, raise dumbbells from shoulder to touch above head

    • shoulders: seated lateral raise — (11'30") sit on the edge of a chair, dumbbell in each hand, bring out to the side just above shoulder height, and down

    • (12'55") bicep curl — seated, hands by sides, twist dumbbell as it comes up

    • chest muscles, pectorals, triceps: (14'18") lying chest press — lie down, legs bent, feet near bum, arms out to the sides, forearms at right angles to the ground, lift straight up

    • (15'51") calf raise on step — stand on edge of step with heels free, dumbbell in one hand, support weight on hand against wall, either two legs: raise and drop heels or one leg: raise one leg out of the way and raise and lower the other

An excellent article about our crazy punitive government’s latest crazy idea: Welcome to the benefit Olympics.

Rather than offer the help and support that people need, the government simply raise that high-jump bar by increasingly impossible amounts.

I might have seen my first aurora — rather subtle, but the iPhone brought out the colours. Thanks to Ian Griffin's tipoff post from last night. This was around 5 am at Waikawa Beach, north of Wellington.

Thriving on the internet, July 1998, with bonus cat

Newspaper article, including photo showing Miraz at a laptop, with a cat on her shoulder.

Hah hah. I discovered this article about me from July 1998 when I was mainly training folks how to use the Internet, or their Macs, or both. Turns out I could see the future. 😆

"Internet sites will one day be as common as phone numbers," says Jordan.

Bonus: the photo includes my cat Minhla, a blue Burmese, sitting on the back of my neck.

The article reads:

Thriving on the internet

BY MARIE MARTIN

City Voice, 09 July 1998

TUTOR Miraz Jordan thrives on teaching people the ever-changing sophistication of the internet.

"Internet sites will one day be as common as phone numbers," says Jordan. Knowledge about the internet has become expected in many home and work based situations.

"You can't escape it; even if you do not have access to it, it is important to become aware," she says.

Jordan's introduction to the internet courses all cost $55, and can be taken in a single day on 1 Aug or in 14 Nov or over two evenings starting on 15 Sept or 15 Oct. Courses are designed for beginners but basic computer skills are expected.

Passionate about her job, Miraz Jordan has been training in this field for over seven years now, the last two years at the CEC.

As well as her standard courses, this year Jordan is offering one of six workshops for women on Suffrage Day, Sat 19 Sept. For $55, women will get three and a half hours sending and receiving e-mail, using newsgroups and finding information.

Another good read by Anne Shillolo: Goodbye Quinn's Landing (A Port Alma Murder Mystery Book 9). 📚

DC Holly Towns sees a bigger picture than the rest of the team have realised, but the pieces gradually come to light and fit together. Port Alma ends up a safer place to live.
