Haven't been for a dawn beach walk for a while, so that's this morning's first planned item. I wonder if a few more birds may be around?

I'm also really enjoying HouseBroken, an American adult animated sitcom, where a poodle runs therapy sessions:

from the perspective of the animals, each one having various issues that usually stem from their owners, the show details the various adventures they go on to deal with their problems.

HouseBroken Title Card.

I'm enjoying watching Season 1 of the Australian crime drama Mystery Road.

Detective Jay Swan [is] assigned to investigate the mysterious disappearance of two young farmhands on an outback cattle station, one a local Indigenous football hero and the other a white backpacker.

A compelling read — I stayed up late for this one. In Dark Water (Detective Shona Oliver Book 1) by Lynne McEwan. Now to buy the next in series. 📚

The author manages to convey the sound of a southwest Scots accent with minimal gestures in the text.

Our Kāhu | Hawk keeps thwarting my attempts to take a good photo. Yesterday that included flying off just as I was waiting for it to turn around to face the camera.

One of the great features of the NetNewsWire RSS reader is you can use your own stylesheet for how to display articles.

I recently realised that when I catch up on the Micro.Blog Timeline I constantly have to scroll down, just a bit, to see photos. I fixed that by putting the article body first.

Settings allows you to choose and edit a stylesheet.
Articles now start with the body so photos more often fit in the view without scrolling.

Hmm, I thought, as I looked down from the lounge window. That bull looks bigger than usual. … And shouldn't he be behind the flax?

Black bull with white face looks up at me.

Yes, yes, he should. Luckily when I yelled sufficiently he pushed his way back through the fence to the paddock he was supposed to be in.

Rural life…

This was a complicated book, and I still haven't figured out what to say about it — Deaths of Jocasta by J.M. Redmann. 📚

It was a tangled book of emotions, sex, poison pen letters, anti-abortion protestors, vicious murders, all while lead character PI Micky undertakes major life changes. Hmmm.

A few months ago I set the Desktop Picture on my MacBook Pro to pull from my Favourites in Photos and then to change the picture randomly every 5 minutes.

Screenshot of Settings.

That created the problem of wanting to see the picture hidden behind my active window. Keyboard Maestro took care of that.

A macro brings an app to the front, hides everything else then closes the window for the app at the front.
Desktop picture on MacBook Pro shows a snow leopard.

It's a special day today as my good friend Willow has come to visit for a while. 🐶

If the rain holds off we'll head to the beach.

Small white dog lying on a rug and looking at the camera.

Depending on rain, wind and tides, the river sometimes carves deep into the sand at the mouth. Then chunks are rather splendidly and randomly carved off.

I was slow to get into this book, but then I was hooked and reading solidly: Death by the Riverside (Micky Knight Mysteries Book 1) by J.M. Redmann. 📚

It's so refreshing and rare to have an actual lesbian protagonist. Some parts are definitely NSFW. Micky is a survivor to be sure!

When we went to Samoa I totally wanted to avoid any Roaming fees so turned off all kinds of stuff on my Phone. I regret it now, when somehow iMessages are only turning up on my Phone not my Mac, and a phone call I actually wanted just failed to connect with me. Grrr.

Now fiddling with Settings…

Ohhhh, I just caught up with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S02E09 — the musical episode. I loved it! Just brilliant! 🖖🏼

People round here go to some lengths to get their vehicles onto the beach (legally a 'road'). The river loops back on itself just now so there's nowhere for most vehicles to go.

River loops back on itself.

Locals dug a channel between the two streams to send the river straight out to sea.

The channel attempting to join two sections of river.

Didn't work so some chance it…

Another good read: Killing Grounds (A Kate Shugak Investigation Book 8) by Dana Stabenow. The 4th of July hijinks were fun too. 📚

Cal Meany is a cheat, a poacher, an abusive father and an adulterous husband. So nobody is that surprised when Kate Shugak finds his body floating in the bay.

Book cover: Killing Grounds.

Erratum: that seal photo I posted yesterday — apparently it wasn't a Kekeno | New Zealand fur seal:

It appears it was a Subantarctic Fur Seal, and DOC were quite excited as they do not normally come this far north. Reports are that after a nice day on the beach it has headed out to sea again.

It's the season (August to October) when some of the driftwood on the beach turns out on closer inspection to in fact be a Kekeno | New Zealand fur seal, come ashore to rest.

Update, 14 August 2023: apparently this isn't a Kekeno:

It appears it was a Subantarctic Fur Seal, and DOC were quite excited as they do not normally come this far north. Reports are that after a nice day on the beach it has headed out to sea again.

One of the things I loved about our Traditional Garden View Villa at Sinalei Resort was the almost or fully outdoor bathroom. Here was the shower. 🇼🇸

Tiled shower with walls but no roof. Beatiful patters of stones make up the floor. Palm trees are visible.

On the plane to Samoa one of the bathrooms was painted to resemble shelves full of books. Titles included:

  • The Importance of Aiming
  • Origami Guide for Toilet Paper
  • Race to the Outhouse by Willie Maykit
  • The Porcelain Polishers Guide
  • Designing for Small Spaces
  • Aerial Hitchhiking

🤣

Amusing wall decoration in the bathroom on the plane - shelves of books.
