On Tiritiri Matangi island this pohutukawa tree is part of the remnants of native forest that survived vegetation clearing for farming. This tree is about 1000 years old.

The best was saved to last. My first ever good view of a Ruru (morepork). It’s not common to see them in the daylight.
Boarding the ferry for the 75 minute trip to Tiritiri Matangi.
Auckland Skytower last night plus fireworks. Perhaps for Diwali.
Good to see recognition for the first inhabitants: Murriyang telescope
Australia’s …Parkes radio telescope has been given a new traditional name to recognize the Wiradjuri, who own the land on which the telescope sits.
The Wiradjuri are some of Australia’s First People who have occupied the continent and its adjacent islands for over 65,000 years.
The telescope received the name Murriyang, which represents the ‘Skyworld’ where a prominent creator spirit of the Wiradjuri Dreaming, Biyaami (Baiame), lives.
Hmm. Papakura pub. Rodeo on TV, Christmas songs on the speakers.

So, 12.18GB huh? On my slow internet that’s a long download.
Darn it. An unexplained community case of Covid-19 in Auckland means this isn’t a great time to be heading up that way to visit friends and family.
Also, a handy way on MacOSX to use Terminal to get the size of a directory quickly:
- du -sh /directory/path
Heh, discovered an old archive of ReadItLater / Pocket files. Briefly looked at a few. I no longer care about that stuff. Trashed. All 1.3GB!
We have a 50 metre driveway from the gate to the house. Today finally it wasn’t rainy or windy and I was able to spray all the wretched grass and weeds that are threatening to overcome the shingle. Just made it before the bottle of concentrated weedkiller ran out.

Mistake number 1: buying frozen veges as a just-in-case back in April.
Mistake number 2: actually cooking something with the frozen veg. Yuk!
I’ll stick to frozen peas, but let the others be I think. Fresh veg all the way.
Weird reviews: on checking what others thought of my next book purchase, one review gave 1 star while highly recommending the book and loving the stories.
❓‼️
I really enjoyed reading Murder Among Friends by Janice Frost 📚:
The victim ran a group at university teaching men how to pick up women. Jane and Steph venture into a dark and dangerous world of misogyny.
Also: incels and problems all women face with unwanted male attention.
Watched the movie Operation Christmas Drop. It’s a lightweight enjoyable romcom. Utterly predictable but a pleasant way to spend 95 minutes. Set in and around very beautiful Guam. 🎬
loosely based on the real-life U.S. Air Force Operation Christmas Drop humanitarian mission.
Informing yourself about the aftermath of recent events? Did you know that the ‘math’ part originally referred to mowing a field?
The “aftermath” is the new growth that comes after said field or meadow is mowed.
Recommended podcast, by the way — a 5 minute listen each week.
From last night: cabbage trees and flaxes against a 9 pm sky. iPhone 11.

This morning’s breakfast was porridge that included home grown strawberries and locally produced honey (glass jar). The cashews come from the bulk bin at the supermarket, but these days they provide paper bags for the bulk items. Porridge in paper packaging too.
I avoid plastic!
