Our unfriendly roads
An email to NZTA today:
For exercise and also to do my bit to reduce car use and save putting some CO2 into the atmosphere I biked from my home at Waikawa Beach, Horowhenua, to the dairy at Manakau today to get the bottle of milk I needed. That's about a 20 Km round trip. That's an easy trip on an electric bike.
The dairy is on SH1, which is so dangerous there's no way I'll ride my bike along any part of it near us. I dismounted at the intersection of Waikawa Beach Road and SH1 intending to wheel my bike along beside SH1 to reach the dairy about 225 metres away.
However the side of the road there was full of dense grass and weeds to at least knee high. See attached photo. I had to chain my bike to the fence and walk beside the road, on the tar seal.
I feel NZTA should at least mow this stretch of ground beside SH1, if a proper footpath is not being laid. This dairy is convenient for all those who live at Waikawa Beach — it's the closest store.
I'm aware of others who cycle to the dairy for supplies. It's not just me.
The climate crisis is urgent and everyone should be doing their part to not only allow less polluting modes of transport, but to encourage them. NZTA could help encourage cyclists and pedestrians from Waikawa Beach to avoid using their motor vehicles for such short trips. A little mowing is all it would take, though ideally there would be a proper footpath.
Please do something to make this 225 metre strip safe for people to access the dairy and nearby vege shops.

Yeah, yeah, sure!

BTW: non-Kiwis — a dairy is a small shop that sells items like milk, butter, bread, non-alcoholic drinks, snacks and other basic supplies.

I’ve finally found my perfect use case for the Apple Pencil on iPad: solving crossword puzzles that otherwise must be printed out, for example, the brilliant The Haunted House. Now I can also do a heap of the Times Archive too.

Every November the tree lupins Lupinus arboreus come into full flower and play havoc with my allergies. I get itchy throat, nose, eyes along with blurry vision and head fog. Today’s Kenacort steroid shot is already helping.

I’m booked on a bike tour for next April. The company will now require Covid vaccination certificates for all participants. Seems like a good thing to me. 💉
I like the idea that after my death my body could become compost, feeding plants that nourish and protect animals, continuing the cycle of life. I hope this is available when I need it. Let’s Visit the Human Composting Facility!

Last night Sasha 🐶 had to go out about midnight then started being restless again, wandering round the house. I put on a little solar powered lamp as a nightlight, put her back on the bed and she settled till morning. Maybe the lamp helped? I think she can see some light.
Lying awake in the night sped me through this very good read: Next in Line (Detective Clare Mackay Book 5) by Marion Todd 📚
Clare wonders why no one who knew Russell seems capable of telling the truth, and whether there is more than one person with a reason to want him dead…

We had a difficult night with Sasha the dog 🐶 who is almost 15, pretty much blind, and hard of hearing. It may be a signal she has dementia. She was restless all night, pacing, barking, wanting out (but not really), on the bed, off the bed. She couldn’t settle. Vet visit planned.
An author, some of whose books I enjoy, wants to be helpful and send customers to the ‘right’ Amazon Store, based on geolocation. She’s not the only author to do this. It infuriates me! I use US Amazon not Aus. I end up at the wrong store then have to mess about to fix things. 📚

A pleasant read: Swamp Sweets (Miss Fortune Mysteries Book 21) by Jana DeLeon 📚

My favourite time, when cabbage trees flower — those white panicles. Their perfume is utterly gorgeous.

I had an idea, worked on it with a friend and today we’re launching a summer photo event for Waikawa Beach: Wow Waikawa! Folks submit photos that show the delight of Waikawa Beach, we print some and put them up over summer. It’s been fun getting things ready.

Feature request, @manton — today, using the web interface, I hit Post instead of Add Photo. Then I had to go back and mess about to add the pic. I realised the Post button should be alone on the right. I think it makes more sense to move the other buttons to group with Preview.

Trying to ripen some fruits on your kitchen counter is totally fruitless - here’s why.

Tonight the mountain peak directly east of us was absolutely luminous in the sunset.
