How lucky was I to get this shot of a Greenfinch on a moving flax spear! The flax spear was waving around all over the place, yet on this one shot the bird’s clear and in focus, even with a glint in its eye. All other shots deleted for being utterly blurry.

I know others have felt unwell for a day after their Covid booster. I’m not quite up to par after yesterday’s jab, but it’s mainly just a bit of a headache and needing some extra naps. That could be equally attributable to not having slept at all well for a couple of nights.

Murder mystery with a huge helping of travel writing: Destination: Maui (Destination Murder Mysteries Book 1) by Ann Shepphird. 📚

I liked it well enough but I think on balance I prefer more investigation and less travel writing… Maybe a different destination would work for me?

I borrowed on paper from the Library Backyard Bird Photography: How to Attract Birds to Your Home and Create Beautiful Photographs, 2014, by Mathew Tekulsky 🐦

Not so much a “How-To” as a “How I did”. Disappointing and I was also concerned cameras have advanced a lot since then.

Wow, this 28 minute film is entrancing: Hargila 🐦 :

Through the efforts of a remarkable conservation leader, Dr. Purnima Devi Barman … the [endangered Greater Adjutant storks] are now protected, celebrated, and increasing their numbers locally.

Gorgeous photography.

As all us ‘rich’ folks get Covid jabs 1, 2 and 3,

The World Health Organisation now says that Africa (the entire continent of 1.3 billion people) won’t reach its target of vaccinating 70% of its population until late 2024.

And:

A handful of wealthy European countries are blocking a proposal at the World Trade Organisation to loosen patent rules for coronavirus vaccines, which would allow the doses to be manufactured more widely.

And:

One thing is certain: The pandemic won’t end for New Zealand [the world!] until it ends for everyone. As long as the developing world can’t access vaccines, we’ll always live under the threat of new variants blasting holes in our own vaccine-acquired immunity.

Little Yellowhammer on a flax spear, singin' away!

Small bird with very yellow chest and head, with beak wide open.

Errands in Levin today. As we drove north past the consecutive rail and river bridges and round a bend we passed a petrol tanker stationary on the side of the road by Tatum Park — flashing lights, cones, cops etc. It had lost a whole front wheel and had driven on the rim for a bit. Must have been some stellar driving to: not crash, not roll, not go off the road and down the bank. By the time we came home from our errand an hour or so later it was gone. The only thing left was the groove in the road from the wheel rim.

Amazing in part because this stretch of road is notorious for its frequent fatal accidents.

It’s a year since I ordered my M1 MacBook Pro. I was worried about moving from a 15“ to a 13” screen. Took me forever to get used to the small screen but now I love that this machine is light and small enough to take anywhere.

Having recently bought mini loaf tins I thought I should actually use them. Found and cooked this: Mini Gingerbread Loaf for Two. It was delicious! Luckily there’s some left for a snack tomorrow morning before breakfast.

I’ve seen a few Spur-winged plovers around recently but haven’t had a chance to take a photo of them yet. This picture from October 2018 will have to do for now. 🐦

Sometimes I try reading romance, but it’s unsatisfying like when hot chocolate is all froth… When Love Wins by Sherryl Hancock. 📚

This photo from February 2020 turns out the be the only one I have of a Goldfinch. 😒 Poor little mite flew into our window and was stunned. 🐦 Need to look out for one to take photos of.

So pleased with my new zoom lens. Juvenile Starling on a flax spear; rabbit on the grass.

Hey @g see how you get on with this Applescript you asked for. Copy the contents into Script Editor and see if it works for what you want. I bet others could do a way better job, but it’s a start. There are also probably much better ways to achieve this, eg with Keyboard Maestro.

I chose dawn today to bike round the village. Slightly chilly but perfect conditions, with no wind. The river was super low, despite it being 2 hours before low tide. The river is more usually about where the bolts attach that diagonal crossbeam on the footbridge.
