Hah, remembering this day in 2020 when global Covid cases numbered less than 500,000.

Those were the days seem wrong to say, but I’m really hoping we’re over the worst part now. (Sadly, maybe not everywhere).

@odd It's truly amazing what's happened in 2 years. Back then at the start we knew nothing about the virus. Now we know so much.

Yes, and I remember reading about that Asian-American doctor who believed the infectious droplets were so small that the virus was really transmitted by air, and she had a hard time getting the WHO to acknowledge that. Now we know, and may construct better suited buildings and ventilation. This especially in schools, where this has been awful for as long as there have been schools. But are we willing to pay for that?

The word "we" in your sentence is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It seems like way too many people haven't learned a thing.

That was a surreal time, wasn't it! Sometimes I'm still taken aback by how high case numbers are now vs how high they were when Victoria was "in crisis" during the second wave (like, between 100–200x higher). Of course, vaccination makes a big difference.

@jimrea Heh. That was, of course, 'we' as in the combined contributions of all kinds of people who aren't 'me'. 😀 I have contributed nothing, but the millions of people who have researched, studied, developed techniques and drugs, endured the virus, helped and cared for those with the virus, developed policies and so on and on have generated a vast amount of knowledge. I've simply read a few things that have increased my own knowledge slightly. I guess there will always be a fringe few who are outliers in anything. 😒

@jayeless We're in the middle of a wave of cases and the government is reducing all kinds of restrictions. That's making me increasingly uncomfortable, I must say.

As far as I'm concerned, by paying attention to and following the science you've done your part. Maybe in NZ anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers are a fringe few, but that certainly isn't the case here in the US or apparently in many places in the world. It is definitely amazing how much knowledge we now have, I well remember the early days when almost nothing was known. How incredible that we now can give ourselves DNA tests without leaving home!!
