The Yellowhammers are singing a lot these days. This one was singing just by the house. Photo from January this year. 🐦

Small bird with very yellow chest and head, with beak wide open.

28 October 2018 I planted lemon thyme by the dog yard. Today, 15 December 2022, it looks and smells fabulous! A bit of watering and weeding from time to time, but otherwise benign neglect. 😀

I’m 26% of the way through The Cardiff Killings (DI Jemima Huxley Crime Thriller Book 1) by Gaynor Torrance but have decided to read no further. I have no points where I can relate to a person desperate to have kids and who cuts herself to relieve unbearable stress.… 📚

It’s barely 9 am and the Levin clock tower tells me it’s already 26C (79F). It’s gonna be a hot one today.

Intersection with cars and a clock tower that shows the temperature as 26C.

Hmmm, I think one Kołaczki at the front maybe looks like the ones the real cook made. Some ‘squares’ were too small so I didn’t even try to fold them over. A bit odd — kind of like shortbread with jam.

Squares of raw pastry on a tray with a dob of jam on each square.
Squares folded over so two opposite corners meet.

Listening to Kismet (1967). I hadn’t realised there were quite so many famous songs in this one show. I first heard “Stranger in Paradise” when I was a kid. 🎶

One of the fantastic features of MarsEdit is easily finding and fixing old posts. When I checked my On This Day page today a few photos from 2018 had gone missing. The solution was to change http to https. So easy in MarsEdit. Fixed a few other bits and bobs in there too.

Not off to a good start cooking Kołaczki — ignored the timer for a moment to finish an email reply and burnt the pot with apricot filling. 😒

This is the kind of conversation I love on Micro.Blog.

Fun conversation about the Year of Millet.

My current music fave is Korolova from Ukraine. I’m working my way through listening to all her music videos. Her music stays with me during the day too. 🎶

I enjoyed reading Knight Blind (Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery Series Book 1) by Alice Bienia. Jorja is relatable, and gradually reveals some of her background while chasing down leads in an unexpected case. I’ll read more in this series. 📚

Deb and I have been watching and enjoying Three Pines but it’s a bit grim and intense. The story lines tend to include the atrocities of the Canadian Residential Schools. For relief, we’re also watching Recipes for Love and Murder which is a deal lighter.

This is such a bird-filled time of year. All the birds come and sit on the flaxes by the house. This Kōurarini European goldfinch was just outside the window… 🐦

Small bird with white beak and red splash on face, gold stripe on wings on a flax spear.

Yay. Waikawa Blueberries is open again. Time for real fruit icecream, fresh blueberries and award winning olive oil. Yum!

A greeting to the day:

Poster of the text.

He kore, he kore
He pō, he pō
He ao, he ao
Takiri mai te ata
Korihi te manu
Tino awatea
Ka ao, ka ao
Ka awatea
Tihei Mouri Ora

From the nothingness (potential being)
Into the different stages of darkness
And finally into the world
As night turns into day
The birds sing
And daylight is here
Into the world
Into the daylight
And I/we are alive

Another good story and an enjoyable read. The Girl Who Lost Him (The Shee McQueen Mystery Thriller Series Book 4) by Amy Vansant. 📚

I quite enjoyed The Sled Dog (The Sheridan County Mysteries Book 2) by Erin Lark Maples:

After the race, [Elizabeth] discovers an abandoned, injured dog and her family falls in love with their new foster pup.

But things aren’t that simple… 📚
