Every Friday our builder gives us a report on the new house. Now the roof is on, the next payment milestone is watertight, except for the garage. Our builder, Steve, says:
First the guys will wrap, then do soffits, install window joinery, fit cavity battens and have a cavity inspection with Council, install cladding, scribers and flashings. Once this part is complete then the Brickwork will start, half high brick inspection with Council and once passed then the brickwork can be completed.
I don't know exactly what some of that means, but it's good to know. 🏡

I was wondering about what some of that means too. :D It seems like solid progress, however.

Cavity inspection sounds like it would be done by a dentist! 🦷🤣 Terminology is different here but I think that’s what we would call a “rough-in” inspection. This makes sure the framing was built well and plumbing and electrical are run safely.

@fgtech That sounds appropriate for where the build is up to… Thanks.

I think one of the nicest things about building a house must be the ability to KNOW what's going into it. Knowing and actually understanding it all would be a challenge for me certainly, but it still seems like a great opportunity!
Each house I've bought was built before 1960 and in every case I've found things that just have to make you wonder.

@kimberlykg Yup, we have all the specifications — both technical and all the stuff we chose ourselves such as door handles. That is a great thing. Back in Wellington we bought in 2000 a house that was built by the owner himself in 1947 or so. We thought there was a power point in every room but discovered there were only a couple of real power outlets and the rest were effectively extension cords under the floor! We eventually had the whole place rewired.

Yeah, those are exactly the kinds of things you find! In one place, we found that they had installed an alarm system where they had cut the electric plug for and then spliced it with speaker wire which they ran under the carpet across the room to the other wall. They had also run a telephone line outside to a gazebo... which I figured out one time when it was raining and suddenly my internet connection died.

I hadn't heard of scribers before… sounds kinda like what I'd call trim. A nicely detailed report, though. Exciting progress!

@dejus I looked up scribers: they're the doohickeys that go between the edge of a door or window and the weatherboard cladding to block up the gap. So I guess that would be trim. It sure is exciting! 😁
