Hmmm, just a secretive superpower carrying out warlike exercises next door. Nothing to worry about …
China did not inform New Zealand about their warship activity in the Tasman Sea before an apparent live fire training …
A furore broke out on Friday, after commercial airline staff picked up unexpected radio messages from Chinese navy ships in the Tasman Sea, warning them to divert from an area between New Zealand and Australia, where military drills were being carried out.

@lmika They're closer to you than they are to me, but still… A bit alarming for both of us. Or rather for all of us in this part of the world.

Good article. Intimidation.
It would be interesting to find out if the Chinese navy exercise just happens to be over any undersea communication cables.

@bradenslen Hah hah. Deb and I were discussing general notions of China (or someone else) attacking NZ. We're a tiny country of 5 million people, 3 or 4,000 Km from anywhere else. We were talking about planes, bombs, ICBMs etc. Then Deb pointed out they'd just need to break our internet cable(s) and we'd be done for. It seems there are 2 cables between NZ and Australia. www.stuff.co.nz/business/...

About the time of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian navy was going to have whole fleet exercises off to coast of Ireland. An attempt at intimidation. The area happened to be above 1. the richest fishing grounds for Ireland's fisherman, 2. also above the area of sea floor where all the undersea cables between Ireland and N. America lay.
Short story: Irish fisherman where having none of it and weren't afraid of a good dustup. Hundreds of fishing boats started assembling. They would load them up with TV cameras and journos and sail out as a fleet to mix it up with the Russians.
The Russians moved their fleet just in time.

@bradenslen Excellent story. 😆 I love the idea that Irish fishers scared off the Russian fleet!
