I love Aotearoa but this is unconscionable — The twin crises that fuelled the hostel fire:
10% of our population are so poor and stressed they can’t afford a place to live or food without government help to pay their rent, or to eat without food parcels donated from leftovers being thrown out by supermarkets.

@alexandra I was recently watching a movie / film from Aotearoa called Waru that showed a character rummaging through their house for coins to try to scratch together money for fuel for the car to attend a family funeral. Meanwhile the hungry kids were given one slice of bread (no butter) each and the character was on an awful "Your call is important to us" loop trying to get emergency money help from Social Welfare. I've never been in that position but it really drove home to me that for many people that describes their daily life exactly. We're voting later this year. That scene (and climate change) will be my key decision makers in my vote.
