Weird thing, but Aotearoa New Zealand Law says that beaches are roads. Land Transport Act 1998: In Part 1, the Interpretation, it says: “road includes— (c) a beach.” Weirder: the Law doesn’t actually define ‘beach’. 😆

So, does that keep them public, but expose them to environmental damage?

@cliffordbeshers Yes and yes. We have a local issue about vehicles on our beach, and how they access the beach. I'm trying to track down a bunch of factual information related to that.

do you have a speed limit at Waikawa? It’s meant to be 30km/hr at Hōkio and Waitarere.

@JeremyWxBaker Thanks to the excellent work of Cr Brannigan a few years ago the speed limit was reduced from an eye-watering 100 Kph to 30 Kph. That may have been a whole of Horowhenua thing. Most folks drive carefully and probably at or below 30 Kph but some don't.
