I’m working back through my photo library finding all my photos of Sasha and Oshi and labelling them. The further back I get, the worse the photos are, in quality, composition, sharpness … everything. I guess that means I have developed in skill over the years. 🤨

Camera phones have helped a lot in raising our average capabiiities, I think. I have considered that photography should be a requirement in schools now, like writing, as part of teaching communication.

@cliffordbeshers I hadn’t considered that, but I think you’re right. In 8th grade I chose photography as one of my elective classes, and learned about dark room work and a little bit about composition, but we were on a tight budget, so we didn’t get to practice so much. I worry a little bit that many kids don’t have parents with means to get a good camera phone today though. @miraz

@odd @cliffordbeshers I think that even with a poor camera there's a lot to be taught about pointing the camera the right way, framing shots, getting closer, getting down to the level of an animal, sorting out how much light is on the subject, focusing on the right thing and so on. I have so many photos of the dogs from above, badly lit dogs, out of focus dogs etc etc.

Yes, I agree, but I was thinking more of the socioeconomic stigma, (which may already be there, so maybe it wouldn’t do much difference). This could of course be handled by a responsible and respected teacher, but kids can be brutal. @cliffordbeshers

There was a wonderful article in the NY Times, perhaps a decade ago, about a pet photographer. This woman had a great niche, producing dramatic photos of peoples' beloved pets. When asked about her method, she said it was very aerobic. She got down to the pet's level and followed them around for hours, often shooting up from below the pet's eye level.

I'd say that part of it is just better cameras. I was looking at a few photos from 13 years ago recently, which were all taken on a high quality SLR, and compared to today, the photos from the camera on my phone come out way better. A better colour balance and sharpness.

@cliffordbeshers I hope she didn't have too many Chihuahuas! 😆 Would have made spectaular photos with that approach though.
