Niue The World’s First ‘Dark Sky Nation’ 🇳🇺
the International Dark-Sky Association … announced an important world-first … the tiny South Pacific nation of Niue is the first country to be formally accredited as an International Dark Sky Place.
This is perfect — I love Niue!

Oh! This is amazing. I sometimes wish Helsinki had a master switch to turn down street lights for an occasional winter hour when aurora borealis is active but alas, need to drive pretty far from Helsinki to catch a proper glimpse at them

@tkoola It's a huge shame that most people have been robbed of the night sky. I'm a fan or preservig dark skies as much as possible, eg by pointing outside lights at the ground rather than letting light spill in all directions.

me too, always loved starry skies and astronomy. This made me want to visit Niue some day (never seen the southern hemisphere sky)

@tkoola 😀 To visit Niue you have to visit Aotearoa New Zealand (all the flights leave from here). We also have some good dark skies. It's pretty dark where I live, and we have some Dark Sky reserves too. And, you'd notice, everything is upside down.

I’d not even heard of Niue until now - and I’m already yearning to be there
