The Renegat by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Sci-Fi. One of my all-time favourite authors, this particular novel is brilliant.
A ship of misfits and screw-ups sent on an impossible mission. All alone in deep space.

@Cheri I somewhat prefer the other series: Retrieval Artist, but like the Diving Universe too. Renegat was a real stand-out though. Probably benefits from having read the previous books in series.

Good to know. I’m curious, have you read any of The Expanse series? I was slow to warm up to the TV show but I love the books, especially for the kickass women: Bobbie, Avasarala, and Drummer. On the TV series, Bobbie is played by a fantastic NZ actress, Frankie Adams.

@Cheri Oh thanks. I'll look for them. Haven't seen the TV show. Nor have I heard of that Kiwi actress…

@Cheri Bit busy at the moment simultaneously reading your latest, the latest Jana DeLeon and another crime novel whose name escapes me. oops.

@Cheri The Expanse is a great show, with fascinating characters. I also enjoy the strong female roles; Bobbie and Chrisjen are great, among others. Oh, and if you're into podcasts, The Incomparable has a good podcast called A Legitimate Salvage on the show.

@Cheri Excellent. It does take a while to get started, as it's a rich universe with lots of interesting characters and events. Give it a few episodes to get established. It won't appeal to everyone, though; in addition to the sci-fi, there's strong language, violence, and some horror aspects.

I found S1 needlessly grim, and I strongly disliked Chrisjen in it. She was like the George W Bush of space. 🤮 Later, I found that much of what I disliked wasn’t true to the books. The later seasons are a better, and go with the tone of the novels more accurately. But the show continues to have dark moments here and there. It’s more Battlestar Galactica than Trek.

@Cheri's comparing to BSG was definitely apt. I remember being confused at first. I'm really bad with names, so it took me quite a while to get them straight, but it's such a character-driven show, I got to know them in time.

@jwhevans Thank you, good to know. It can take a while sometimes to get a handle on a show.
