NZ had to wait a bit longer … to see the moon landing in 1969.
We didn’t have a direct satellite link … so a pilot from the RNZAF flew to Sydney… picked up the tapes and then NZers were able to see the footage about 4.5 hours later.

this reminds me of the film “The Dish” not NZ but still an interesting one for how tech has moved on now.

Back in the days when everything wasn’t instantaneous!
One of the newspapers I inherited from one of my great-aunts is one of the Miami papers’ moon landing coverage, and the front-page photo…is the astronauts practicing exiting the LM in a swimming pool weeks before ;-)
