Dashed off to brush my teeth during the long ads in an online TV show. Had a sudden memory of the first 40 or so years of my life when if you weren’t in front of the TV set while something was playing you just plain old missed it. How things have changed!

It's a fundamental difference. You could not miss a show. You had no guarantee you'd ever have a chance to see it again. That did make reruns and syndication more appealing!
It's also hard to believe that the absolute best lineup was on Saturday night in the 1970s, at least in the States. All In The Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett on one night on one network. It was my favorite time of the week!

@macgenie In the 60s and early 70s NZ had one channel, broadcasting evenings only. But one favourite was the Goodnight Kiwi broadcast at end of transmission. Everyone from my generation has fond memories of the kiwi and cat going to bed in the TV dish.

@tones Yup. Rewatching that clip was lovely. Reminder of youth past, perhaps?

@macgenie - I can see why you have fond memories of that! How cute! What a fun way to sign off.

@DrOct Once 24/7 TV the Goodnight Kiwi had to retire. We need more of those quirky fun things in our lives, not less.

yes. i wasn't allowed to watch much tv as a kid so staying up and seeing the goodnight kiwi generally meant it was a special occasion.

I have such fond memories of the goodnight kiwi. I can still remember the music and much of the video.
