Evidence of voyaging Polynesians settling in Aotearoa more than 700 years ago. An excavation at Mangahawea Bay on Moturua Island in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand … Carbon dating puts the first inhabitants in the area around 1300AD… Much more Polynesian, Tahitian, Rarotongan.

@smokey I’m trying to educate myself about the early human history of New Zealand.

👍 The archaeologist or paleoanthropologist in me finds these kinds of things fascinating.

@smokey My item might not have been very clear. The first humans in New Zealand arrived round about 1250, give or take a bit. They were from East Polynesia.

It’s a long way from Rarotonga to New Zealand in a small boat.

No, your item was plenty clear…my brain, not so much ;-) It was considering all of the peopling of the earth paleoanthropology, but up to 700 years ago is a bit of a stretch ;-)
