Felicia is a very dedicated mother. She's sitting on 5 eggs I've left with her. In a couple of weeks they *might* hatch. 🐦

Hen egg vs quail egg. The last hen eggs we bought are jumbo size. In the photo I put a regular size Coturnix quail egg next to the smallest of the jumbo eggs. The hen eggs are in a normal egg box. Also on the beach today this probable green-lipped mussel, with brown ‘beard’.

I haven’t seen any penguins on our beach — until today with this dead one. 😒

Someone had marked its location with a driftwood cross of sorts. The bird was roughly 48 cm from beak tip to ‘tail’ end. 🐦

Florence and Felicia are two of last year’s quail. One of them laid the middle egg in the photo of 3 eggs. It’s a normal size for a quail egg (11 grams). Spot is from the previous year, and Fliss is now 7 weeks old.

This tiny egg (9 grams) and the huge egg (13 grams) came from the run they’re in. 🐦

Today I separated the quail into two groups in separate runs. Poor little baby Flop has been badly bullied by Fatima, the male, meanwhile her mother Felicia is sitting on 5 eggs. I’ve kept Florence, a good, steady girl with them. Fatima, baby Fliss and Spot are now in together.

Clever Siri. I said: “Hey Siri, remind me to move the lime tree in Autumn”. Siri scheduled my reminder for 09:00 on 21 March this year. Technically the first day of Autumn. Perfect.

The beach was looking a bit gorgeous this morning. I had just dug in those sticks to help mark the track.

In the distance is Kāpiti Island, which friends and we will be staying on overnight in a few weeks time. It’s a protected island where endangered species live.

Yesterday this fishing vessel was working *really* close to shore. A good swimmer could have easily reached it. Apparently they can come as close as they like until they reach their quota limit.

The other day I wrote a post with a list in it. Mysteriously, it showed up on the Home Page of my Micro.blog-based blog without any list bullets. I use the Marfa theme.

That was disconcerting and I tried a few things with Custom CSS to sort it out. Finally I found what worked, though it took quite some time to be visible on the Home Page:

Part of the ‘problem’ is that posts on the Home Page appear in a list. The list marker (bullet point) is removed so we don’t get a bullet point before each post (#post-list li).

A list that appears within a post has to have the marker restored, hence (#post-list li li). As for the list-style-type, choose whatever marker you prefer. Just be aware it will apply to all kinds of lists in all posts. If you sometimes use unordered lists and at other times ordered lists then my code above will need to be refined.

I haven’t tested it, but something along the lines of #post-list li ul li and #post-list li ol li might work.

At our beach we sometimes get Bluebottle jellies and By The Wind sailors, but I haven't before seen these small clear jellies. There weren't loads of them, but I spotted maybe a dozen on our brief walk. The biggest was maybe a hand-span.

Yesterday’s wasp sting was painful at the time, but I washed and iced it and it seemed OK. Today my arm's slightly swollen at the sting site, and a bit tender. More icing. Antihistamines were suggested but I truly despise taking them… So many wasps round here.

Last night I really enjoyed the movie Victoria & Abdul. It was a lot lighter than I expected. The excesses and racism of British ‘royal society’ of the time were ghastly, and left me as a born-English person feeling ashamed and horrified. Judi Dench was fabulous, as always.

Yesterday I tried out Whispers Cafe in Levin. I had a hot chocolate, with fish and chips. I'd have to say the meal was fine, but somehow it didn't work. The hot chocolate was fine, and I'd have one again. The Pan Fried Crumbed Fish served with garden salad, fries & homemade Tartare sauce was all essentially good, but somehow it didn't work. I couldn't finish the meal because it was cloying. Even though I squeezed the lemon wedge (complete with sticker!) over the fish and there was a dressing on the salad and radish in the salad, the meal needed 'zing': something sharp and tasty to make it work. Next time I visit I'll try something different from the menu.

Today we took the dogs on an outing and decided on lunch at Murrayfield Cafe, halfway between Levin and Shannon, which has outdoor seating and a cute petting zoo. I was hoping for a Thai curry. When we arrived we discovered they wouldn't allow us to have the dogs at the outdoor tables. It was too hot to leave the dogs in the car, so we drove further afield.

Highway 57 Bakery and Cafe is in Shannon. It has a pleasant courtyard (dogs allowed) and we've stopped there before for coffee. I didn't really want fish and chips a second day in a row, but that was the item on the menu I least didn't want. It also came with a salad, and I again chose a hot chocolate. Deb ordered an omelette. Deb found the omelette too greasy and didn't finish her meal. My hot chocolate was OK I guess. The crumbs on my fish had a very odd taste and the fish itself wasn't great. The chips were OK, and the tomato sauce was fine. How anyone can wreck a plain old salad is beyond me, but it was not something I wanted to eat. All in all, the best thing about that lunch was the garden.

After lunch we strolled with the dogs over to the memorial garden by the railway station. That was a brief but pleasant walk. There was a candle-shaped memorial with just one name on it in the centre of the garden. It was dedicated to a young lad who fought in the Boer War and was killed at age 20. The other stone at the entrance had multiple names on it and was a standard war memorial.
