In The Catlins, Nugget Point, Tokata has a lighthouse, a spectacular view and rocks that resemble gold nuggets. It was really windy up there, with sheer cliffs beside the track… One false step and that’d be the end of you. Fabulous views on a sunny day though.

Currently rationing the bird food for the Waxeyes. I was intending to buy more today but with the Covid shutdown the shop is closed and I shouldn’t be going out anyway. The birds will just have to go a bit short for a few days.

Heh, healthy Kiwis. 😀 People are panic buying because of the lockdown, but:

According to Foodstuffs, bananas and broccoli are top of the list of what people are buying. Toilet paper is at number 5.

After another thunderstorm around 5.30 am the power has come back on. Immediately made a cup of tea. Thanks to the lines workers out in this awful weather and under a level 4 shutdown keeping us powered up!

Woken at 0330 by loud torrential rain (now stopped). I’d like a cup of tea but the power’s still out. 😢

Thunderstorm took our power out. 😒 Good thing we’ve got the fire going.

Aotearoa New Zealand today has a case of Covid in the community that can’t be linked to the border. Precautionary assumption is that it’s the Delta variant. The whole country is going into Level 4 shutdown from midnight tonight for at least 3 days. 12 months since last Level 4.

Feature request or suggestion @help : put some of the info from or even just the link to Exporting from Micro.blog - Getting started - Micro.blog Help Center on the page where one can actually export via the web interface. I spent ages trying to find what a .bar format is.

OK, today Vodafone rang me about our Internet upgrade. — Maybe our days of VDSL slow Internet are over — A new 4G modem is on its way. By the end of the month we should be speeding across the Interwebs. 😀 Also a cheaper plan, no contract and still unlimited data. 👍

At Roaring Bay rare Yellow-eyed Penguins come and go at dawn and dusk. We spotted two. 🐦 A much more distant view than on the Milford Wanderer when a couple floated by looking like driftwood, till they put their heads up! Zoomed and cropped. Bonus Sealion.

The Seascape Accommodation in Kaka Point, The Catlins was a superb place to stay. Gorgeous units with a super view, directly across a not very busy road from the beach. The hosts were extremely welcoming too, with extras like a packet of chips, some chocolate and a friendly note.

My two Japanese quail are clearly independent thinkers, having produced these first eggs of the season. Thing is, we have 10.5 hours of daylight today and they “shouldn’t” start laying till we have 12 hours daylight per day — ie late September. 🐦 🥚 Clever girls!

4 quail eggs.

Hmmm, I see there’s an OS update to 11.5.2. Updating…

BTW: not looking for troubleshooting tips or anything on my Mac randomly rebooting. It’s more just a record.

Nice views of Tautuku Bay from Florence Hill Lookout in The Catlins.

3Km southwest of Papatowai, a short gravel road leads to sweeping Tautuku Bay, which can be viewed from … the Florence Hill Lookout. The glow isn’t your imagination, it’s the quartz content of the sand.

My M1 MacBook Pro just randomly restarted itself (3rd time so far in the last month), losing the Micro.Blog post (brief text and 3 photos) I’d written in the Mac app but not posted. Starting to be annoyed / concerned about these restarts. All release versions of software.

Lake Wilkie was nice from the viewing point at the top, but at eye level it was spectacular.

formed after the last ice age when water became trapped in a depression between ancient sand dunes and a cliff. … it’s called a “bog lake” … no fish …

Thank you for your Micro Camp talk @amit I really enjoyed it. Great story about the donkey! And 👍 the shoutout to us Kiwis.

Had a magical wildlife encounter today when this White-faced heron, matuku moana followed me home from my dog walk and hung out on our deck for half an hour, pretty much within arm’s reach. It lives at the lakes about 400 metres away.
