Be smart with MarsEdit

Arrange windows —

I'm making a lot of posts on another Micro.Blog blog just now. Of course I'm using MarsEdit, because I'm smart. 😀

I'm a fussy writer: I like my workspace just so. In the case of MarsEdit that means I want the editing window on the left, filling half the screen, and the preview on the right, filling the other half. I never think to use Fullscreen for anything except movies though, so the Menu Bar is still visible.

Just recently I've found these Applescripts handy to get things just how I like them.

1] get the bounds of the screen so I know where to put the windows.

tell application "Finder"
	get bounds of window of desktop
end tell

That got me this result: {0, 0, 1680, 1050}. Then I did some division and addition.

2] I made the Applescript to set my MarsEdit windows where I want them. Index 1 refers to the editor and index 2 to the preview. I make sure to click on the editor window so that it'll be index 1.

tell application "MarsEdit"
	set bounds of window index 1 to {4, 23, 840, 1046}
	set bounds of window index 2 to {841, 23, 1680, 1046}
end tell

Ahhhh.

If you're an Applescript person, feel free to help me improve on my index use. I just don't see how to address the two windows more specifically. Perhaps something's possible with the name?

And, by the way, I trigger this with Keyboard Maestro, because I'm smart in that way too.

Doesn't MarsEdit just do the right thing and remember where windows were? Well, of course, but sometimes 'stuff' happens…

Hooray for Dana Stabenow! A reasonably priced Kindle book in a favourite series AND I’m allowed to order it, even though I’m in New Zealand. So often these days the Kindle books are over $15 and I’m excluded by where I live.

Even the dogs don’t really want to be on the beach when it’s a roaring southerly off the Antarctic and only 7C. Because they’re small dogs their faces are too close to the sandstorm.

Our first winter storm didn’t waste a second, even starting on the last day of autumn. Tonight it’s a bit grim out there: cold, blustery gales, rain. Last night included thunderstorms and hail. Wind map source

I’ve started working on a new writing project of my own devising and have been throwing myself into it with enthusiasm. I doubt it’ll earn me any income, but I’m having so much fun doing something I love. It’s been a while…

First day of Winter; first winter fire. Oshi has the prime spot by the woodburner. Ares is on a chair by me. Sasha prefers things a little cooler. 🐈 🐶

Those who don’t live in a monarchy might find this calendar of upcoming 21-gun salutes in Wellington amusing. Locals might find them interesting too. @herself : do you hear these across the harbour in Eastbourne?

List of 3 dates coming up soon when there will be a 21-gun salute in honor of Royal birthdays.

Back in the early oughts I wrote articles on stuff. I just rediscovered a link to one on my old blog. The WiseWomen mailing list and website was a great place for women web folk, managed and paid for by @dori . Unfortunately the domain has new owners and is now junk. 😒

I forgot to watch the Budget so saw only the last 10 minutes. 😒 However, it seems the Government is putting money to mental health, child wellbeing, trains, Māori, education, climate change, hospitals … in other words, the right things. 👏

The quail are fine, but it feels like the universe is out to get them. Overnight some uncontrolled dog tried to dig under the cage. There’s a print of a big-dog paw in the freshly disturbed dirt. Too many folks around here don’t control their dogs closely.

Looks like we have a few days coming up that’ll fill the water tank, give the garden a good wetting and be fairly windy but no too cold.

Forecast showing 3 very rainy rather windy days coming up.

Kiwis: I love the wall dots from HappyMoose and now the price has dropped a heap:

we used to charge $29.95 for a set of four 15x15cm wall dots. Now you’ll pay just $19.47.

Tom Scott’s latest NZ video: Testing A Zip Line That Goes Round Corners (5 mins) is another good one.

I had fun with Rotorua’s Canopy Tours zipline through native forest in 2013, (no corners). Photo: Me dangling from a zipline after finally unclenching my hands from the rope.

Overnight gales opened up the quail runs and I feared the worst at dawn when I saw the problem. Glee was sitting just outside and scuttled back in when I approached. Fliss was nearby and fortunately easy to catch. The other two hadn’t escaped. Whew! Secured now.
